Abir Karmakar, born in 1977 in Siliguri, West Bengal, is a contemporary Indian visual artist renowned for his photo-realistic, voyeuristic paintings exploring identity, memory, and history within intimate domestic settings. He earned a BFA from Rabindra Bharati University Kolkata in 2001 and an MFA from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 2003. Karmakar initially focused on androgynous human figures in the 2000s, later transitioning to detailed interior scenes devoid of figures in series like "Scent" (2011). Inspired by Dutch genre painting, his compositions depict psychological narratives through everyday objects. Notable exhibitions include "Here everything is fine" (2020), "Displacement" (2017), "Room, Interrupted in Passage" (2012), and "The Morning After" (2011). Karmakar's innovative approach extends to sculptures and video installations, showcasing a diverse artistic practice.
