Bhupen Khakhar studied accounting before moving to Baroda in 1962 to pursue a new career as a writer and artist. Khakhar, who was mostly self-taught, subsequently rose to prominence at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Baroda. Khakhar found it essential to paint something that pervades his own environment when he first began painting. He merges numerous traditions, both eastern and western, in his art with utmost naturalness, becoming the emblem of a new universe in the process. Khakhar constantly pushed the boundaries of the subject matter, frequently tackling contentious topics and arising personal anecdotes He began exploring the personal and cultural ramifications of his homosexuality in his work in the 1980s where fantasy is an important part of his works
Khakhar was a key member in the Baroda Schools painting bright narrative paintings that frequently integrate mystical aspects. He took part in the 1968, 1972, and 1975 Triennales in New Delhi. In 2000, he received the Prince Claus Award from the Royal Palace of Amsterdam in 1986, he won the Starr Foundation Fellowship from the Asian Council, and in 1984, the Indian Government Padma Shri Award for Excellence was given to him.
