Demodar Vithaldas Gajjar is a master craftsman and artist. He creates contemporary and traditional designs using tussar silk as his canvas. Textile block-making saudagiri craft originated in his family about 200 years ago. His artistic talent was recognized in India and abroad. He has developed a unit for textile designing. block making and block printing at Vadodara.
He has been an advisor for various textile mills and educational institutions in India. His views and ideas were taken by the Government of India, Ministry of textiles, on Kala Shiksha activities. During his study he received several awards in arts, crafts, graphics and textile design. He was in the teaching panel in the textile department in the faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Vadodara. He has been a dignified guest at various seminars and workshops.
He received prestigious awards such as Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy Award (Crafts) in 1962, Madhya Pradesh State Kala Parishad Award (Graphics) in 1963 and Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy Award (Graphics). In 1982 he was invited as Visiting Faculty at Manchester Polytechnic and in 1983 he received Gold medal at IESDN Trade Fair Selection Award. He exhibited in many National and International exhibitions such as at Taj Art Gallery in 1965 and 1967, in 1983 Exhibition at University of Edwards Ville, Southern Illinois, USA 1983 Exhibition at Commonwealth Institute, Scotland. The artist passed away in 2017.
