Biography

Jogen Chowdhury is known for his 'magic realist' paintings, characterized by his expressive cross-hatching technique. His unique portrayal of the human figure is renowned for its ability to highlight the concealed and sometimes sinister impulses underlying social interactions.

Born in what was formerly Bengal and is now Bangladesh, Jogen Chowdhury studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata. His artistic journey has taken him to numerous exhibitions and biennales, both in India and internationally. Some notable events include his participation in the I, III, and IV Triennales in Delhi in 1972, 1975, and 1978 respectively, the Sao Paolo Biennale in 1979, and the II Havana Biennale in 1986. His works were also part of the 'Festival of India' in Geneva in 1989.

Chowdhury's art can be found in prestigious collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Glenbarra Museum in Japan. He currently resides in Santiniketan.
