The Veteran printer, painter, and photographer Jyoti Bhatt is also a multidisciplinary artist, mentor, and educator. He was among the first group of students in the Fine Arts Faculty of the M.S. University. He investigated the academic divides between art and craft, inspired by his mentor, artist K. G. Subramanyan. He continued his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, Italy, as well as the Pratt Institute in New York, where he was exposed to abstract expressionism. His early works reflected the cubist style, before shifting to pop-art imagery and finally to a style inspired by traditional folk designs. Though Bhatt worked in a variety of mediums, including watercolors and oils, it was his printmaking that drew the most attention. He began photographing traditional Indian craft and design in the late 1960s. He regards his documentary photography as an art form. Jyoti Bhatt, a National and International award winner, continues to experiment with new styles and techniques. A founding member of the Baroda Group of Artists, he also joined the artistic initiative, Group 1890. He currently resides and works in Baroda.
He received the President's Gold Plaque and National Award in 1956. Jyoti Bhatt received the Padma Shri in 2019, and theFellowship of Lalit Kala Akademi in 2022. He received the National Award, 1963, at the Annual Art Exhibitions of Lalit Kala Akademi, NewDelhi and was awarded a special ‘Gaurav Puraskar by Gujarat State Lalit Kala Akademi, a LifeTime Achievement Award, by Gujarat State and Kailash Award Asmita Parva (Morari Bapu's) in 2011.
