"I like my sculptures to be in sync with nature, relating to the earth and the surrounding environment."
He has been playing with clay from a young age, and this has influenced his approach to art. The rustic environment in which he grew up had a big influence on him. He also visited Indian quarries to examine different sorts of stones, which he eventually used in his works as part-polished, part-rough stone surfaces. During his journey to Japan, he was inspired by the Japanese manner of working, which included the use of tools while maintaining sensitivity. His remarkable sculptures are proudly displayed across several areas of Baroda. The Banyan tree, considered the heart of Baroda, received a sculptural language from him.
He exhibited at the National Exhibition in New Delhi, the XII Biennial in Belgium, the Contemporary Asian Art Festival in Japan, the International Festival of Art in Baghdad, and the Festival of India in Tokyo, Japan. Patel was named Commissioner of the IVth Triennale in New Delhi in 1978. Patel was honored with numerous honors, including the National Award in 1961 and 1976, Gaurav Puraskar Lalit Kala Akademi 1997, Kalidas Samman 2005.
He passed away in 2017 at Vadodara.
