“I am not a born artist. I am a trained artist. I love black and white. I am interested in forms.”
The most distinguished printmakers of the country, for Vinod Ray Patel’s art was a means of self-expression, even self-indulgence. An impatient experimentalist, he dabbled into a variety of media—oil on canvas, acrylic on glass, dry pastels, lithography, silkscreen, etching, woodcut, linocut, etc. The body of VR’s work is extremely large. The lines are sharp and powerful without sentimentality, the images uncluttered. His paintings have diverse thematic focuses. Some are near-abstracts that seem to portray an unspecified sensual encounter.
He participated in various solo and group Printmaking and Painting exhibitions at Taj Art Gallery, Los Angeles, USA, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Delhi. He received Cultural Scholarship from Govt. of India in 1966 and 68. M.S. University Fellowship in 1960. Awarded at National Art Exhibition in 1960, Gujarat State Art Exhibition in 1961,62, 64 and 65 and Bombay Art Society in 1962, 63 and 75. He has commissioned for various Book Illustrations, Logos, Catalogues and Packaging for various companies and organizations.
