"Metamorphosis of Mediums” presents a transformative journey steeped in tradition yet propelled by innovation. Ajit Varma, son of the revered muralist Gyarsilal Varma and inspired by the pioneering work of KG Subramanyan, navigates the creative struggle with ingenious breakthroughs.
Embracing his heritage while forging new paths, Varma's exploration of unconventional mediums defines his artistic evolution. From scaling up papier-mâché sculptures, creating intricately detailed animal subjects, to employing fire to design patterns, shape fragile paper into solid sculptural forms, his deep understanding of materials results in remarkable artistry.
Venturing further, Varma redefines relief sculptures with papier-mâché on plywood, carving intricate pieces that breathe life into the medium, reminiscent of K.G. Subramanyan's playful manipulation of clay.
This exhibition also showcases Varma's mastery in mixed media. Incorporating leather, canvas, threads, glass, wooden beads, brass wire, and metal sheets, each material converges purposefully, giving rise to entirely novel forms. Some of these works are autobiographical such as portraying the emotional and physical turmoil of throat cancer caused by chain-smoking. Ajit Varma often turns to his own self for forms and subject matter.
Varma's art harmonizes disparate textures and tactile elements to convey profound narratives. A homage to Subramanyan's terracotta sculptures is seen in the introduction of blue pottery relief sculptures, infusing Rajasthan's tradition with contemporary allure, showcasing Varma's reinvention of classical art forms.
"Metamorphosis of Mediums" promises an immersive journey through Varma's artistic evolution, honoring tradition while pushing boundaries, innovation, and a deeply personal exploration of the human condition.
